Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe praised striker Callum Wilson after the former Coventry striker fired the Cherries' to a 1-0 victory over Charlton.

The Addicks came into the match at the Goldsands as the last remaining unbeaten side in the division following Nottingham Forest's lunchtime defeat.

However, Wilson looked intent on ending that run, giving the Cherries the lead inside the opening three minutes.

And Howe admitted that he was delighted for Wilson and his team-mates after a tough week on the training ground.

He said: "Callum has settled in really well and today he worked tirelessly to put the Charlton defenders under pressure.

"He has worked hard with the other players and the goal was just the icing on the cake for him.

"We came out of the traps so quickly and that was really what I wanted.

"We used the international break as a real hard workout and I am glad the lads have got their win today because they deserved it.

"We saw the week as the ideal time to work on that fitness and we worked them really, really hard but they did it well.

"It played dividends today because I thought we played really well in attack and our defenders were solid throughout.

"Tommy Elphick signed a new deal and is a committed player that is what we want.

"You can see how committed he really is with how he plays and we are over the moon that we got his future sorted."

In truth Charlton offered very little in the first half with Wilson and co dominating the Goldsands turf.

And the away side's task was made even more difficult in the second-half when Igor Vetokele and Johnny Jackson failed to return to the field.

But boss Bob Peeters refused to make excuses and accepted that his side deserved nothing from the match.

He said: "I think Bournemouth did very well, they played very high and we did not have a solution for their attacking threat.

"For their goal we gave the ball away when we were in possession which we would not usually do.

"At half-time we had to change our game. We lost Igor Vetokele to injury, he is a big asset for us going forward and he will be a doubt now for the next match.

"We were also forced into make a change with (Johnnie) Jackson because I feared he would get a red card and we could not afford to play the game with 10 men.

"I think we looked much better in the second half but overall we were not at our best and they deserved the win.

"It is a shame to lose our record but the important thing is to now get it out of our system before the next game.''
