Jake Evans bagged a brace for Cheltenham in a thrilling tie but it was Charlie McCann who claimed the winner to end York's unbeaten start to the season.
York settled the quicker and took the lead after just 12 minutes when Alex Newby's shot was saved by Wyll Stanway only for the ball to run loose and Ollie Pearce to tuck it away.
The Robins were awarded a penalty when Robbie Cundy was hauled down in the box by Ollie Banks and although McCann's spot kick was saved, Evans nipped in to score the rebound on 18 minutes.

York finished the half strongly with Harry Boyes sending an effort whistling just wide of the post before Newby had a 20-yard effort saved.
Cheltenham took the lead on 66 minutes when Evans drilled a low effort just inside the post from the edge of the area for his second of the game.
But the lead lasted just eight minutes with former Cheltenham striker Jovan Malcolm equalising with a fine diving header from a Boyes cross.
The winner came on 86 minutes, McCann's shot creeping under the diving Alfie McNally, moments after the keeper had denied Evans his hat-trick with a smart save.
