The 32-year-old has been looking for a new club following his release from The Hawthorns at the end of last season, having had an unsuccessful trial at Blackpool last month.
Lyttle tried his luck with the North Derbyshire strugglers but McFarland confirmed that he would not be pursuing his interest in the player any further.
"Des Lyttle trained with us a few times over the last week or so and we won't be taking that any further," McFarland told the club's official website.
The Spireites manager added that he hopes to sign Marvin Robinson to a new deal after giving the player a week to make a decision on a new contract offer.
"We offered Marvin a contract last Thursday and we gave him seven days to reply and I have spoken to his agent today (Thursday) and expect to do so again this evening," McFarland added.
Meanwhile, the Second Division's bottom club have been casting their eye over two more trialists, with Canadian international Brad Parker and North East-based Chris Lanson also getting a run out with the club this week.
Parker can play either in midfield or defence and had a trial at Division One side Bradford City last January after failing to make a first team breakthrough with Dutch giants Feyenoord.
McFarland confirmed they are looking at fresh faces but admits they are in no position to sign players at the moment.
"We have had several trialists over the last few weeks and we will continue to do that between now and the end of the season," McFarland said.
"We are not in a good position to bring in many more players than what we have, so the idea is to look at them for the future."
