Rotherham striker Jamie Proctor has been ruled out for the season and will undergo knee surgery on Friday.
Summer signing Proctor, 25, ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament during last weekend's home defeat to Charlton and is scheduled for an operation that will sideline him for at least six months.
"Regrettably, I think he's out for the majority of the season," said Millers boss Paul Warne. "Best-case scenario is that he will come back with a month to go.
"I know he will look after himself. I know he will train and do everything. He's a brilliant kid. I feel sorry for him. I wouldn't have thought we'll see him on the grass until April.
"For any squad to lose one of their talisman, so to speak, is a massive blow. His performance at Huddersfield, his 45 minutes there, was probably the best I've seen from a Rotherham number nine for years and years.
"It's a massive blow for us and him. That's the nature of the beast we're in. Injuries happen all the time and it gives somebody else a chance."
Proctor was involved in a collision with Charlton skipper Chris Solly midway through the second half on Saturday and was taken to hospital after being stretchered off.
Rotherham paid Bolton an undisclosed fee, reported to be £75,000, to sign Proctor in July and he scored his first goal for the club in their recent Carabao Cup win against Lincoln.
