Brentford's Alan McCormack has been given a five-match ban for abusing a match official with "a reference to gender".

The Football Association upheld a charge arising from Brentford's Sky Bet Championship game against Cardiff on April 19, when Lisa Rashid was on duty as an assistant referee.

McCormack attended a disciplinary hearing on Thursday and was fined £6,000 and ordered to attend an education course.

The 32-year-old's offence was judged to be an aggravated rule breach and he will now miss games against Barnsley, QPR, Fulham, Blackburn and Birmingham.

A club statement read: "Brentford Football Club acknowledges the FA's decision and disciplinary sanctions against Alan.

"We are awaiting the written reasons for the verdict and neither the player nor the Club will make any further comment on this matter until they have been received."
