Hartlepool defender Carl Magnay is a major doubt for the Sky Bet League Two clash with Newport after suffering a rib cartilage injury.

Magnay was substituted just 22 minutes into last weekend's 2-1 home defeat to Notts County with Jordan Richards taking his place, and although the damage is not as bad as first feared, he is unlikely to be fit for this game.

Striker Jake Orrell will miss out after suffering a recurrence of the thigh injury he sustained in pre-season and which has prevented him from making a first appearance of the campaign.

Central defender Rob Jones is also a doubt with a back problem.

Former Pools winger Jack Compton is expected to be missing again for Newport as he recovers from a calf problem.

County are also without striker Lenell John-Lewis, who has a serious knee injury and may not play until after Christmas.

Defender Jamie Turley (knee) is a doubt, but winger Jordan Green should be fit to play after an ankle problem.
