Shrewsbury have sacked manager John Askey with the club 18th in Sky Bet League One after just four wins in 17 games.

The club have also announced the departures of assistant John Filan and first-team coach George Pilkington, with goalkeeping coach Danny Coyne taking charge on an interim basis.

After losing a number of key players in the summer, Shrewsbury have struggled this season and sit just three points above the relegation zone.

Shrews chief executive Brian Caldwell blasted as "a pack of lies" reports that Askey was facing the sack just five days ago, in an interview with local paper the Shropshire Star.

But after dismissing Askey on Monday, he said: "Unfortunately, it has not worked out the way everyone thought it would.

"I think we just now need to take stock of where we are at. We've given quite a lot of time to get the consistency which hasn't materialised in my opinion.

"A lot of people remember last season where we had a phenomenal season, which was a hard act to follow. But you've got to just look at that in balance as well and we're just looking for the team to play consistently well."
