Notts County have sacked John Sheridan, following a run of eight straight League Two defeats.
The Magpies have slipped to 22nd in the table, with the latest loss coming at the hands of Cambridge United who won 4-0 on Monday.
County have won just once in the league since the start of October and are only one point above the relegation zone.
Former England international Alan Smith will take caretaker charge and the decision on a new boss will, according to Sky sources be made by Alan Hardy, who is due to complete his takeover of the club shortly.
Smith will take charge on Saturday against Morecambe but the club hope to have their new manager in place for the derby clash with Mansfield a week later.
Sheridan only took over in May of this year, having managed Oldham Athletic last season, and County have won just one home league fixture this season.
A club statement issued on Monday reads: "Notts County FC can confirm that John Sheridan is to leave his position as manager with immediate effect.
"The club will be making no further statement at this time."
