Kevin Smith is set to leave Dundee United as a free agent and sign for League One new boys Notts County.
The 23-year-old striker will pen a one-year deal at Meadow Lane, with the opportunity to prolong that agreement should he impress.
It appeared at one stage as if the length of the deal would prove to be a sticking point, with Smith initially holding out for a two-year contract.
However, having impressed during a recent trial period, a compromise has now been reached and the relevant paperwork will be put in place on Monday.
"It's still a one-year deal but we have enhanced it," County chairman Ray Trew told the
Nottingham Evening Post.
"We've met in the middle and we are glad to have finally agreed terms with him.
"We were not confident at this moment in time to give him two years. If he performs on the pitch, we will give him an extension to the contract."
Strengthen
Trew has also confirmed that the Magpies are closing on two other targets, although he has refused to reveal their identities.
"I'd rather not say anything at the moment because I don't want to alert other clubs, but we're confident they will be joining us," he added.
"We have already got a very talented squad with a good spirit, but there are still a few areas we want to strengthen before the start of the season."
Trew, who bought Nottingham Rugby on Friday, is also flying out to America this week in order to complete the sale of one of his companies - a deal which will provide much-needed funding for County.
"An American company wants to buy one of my businesses and I hope to be able to conclude the deal tomorrow (Tuesday)," he said.
"They are very eager to buy and I am very eager to sell because it will clear the debts at this club a lot quicker.
"The money will be pumped into both entities, the football and rugby clubs."
