Aberdeen squandered the opportunity to go top of the Scottish Premiership after they were held to a 1-1 draw with Motherwell at Pittodrie on Saturday.

Former Celtic striker Scott McDonald (73) found enough space in the penalty area to meet a free-kick and power his header past Danny Ward.

The visitors had dominated most of the opening half and both Marvin Johnston and Keith Lasley came close with shots.

But the Dons opened the scoring two minutes before the break when the unmarked Adam Rooney netted with a glancing header from a Niall McGinn cross.

Aberdeen had gone into the game on the back of four successive defeats and they only avoided another through the heroics of Ward, who made three impressive saves during stoppage-time to thwart Johnston Theo Robinson and Lionel Ainsworth.

Hearts moved to within two points of the Dons with a 2-0 victory over Ross County, despite playing virtually all of the second half with 10 men.

Callum Paterson crashed the ball into the net after Sam Nicholson had been halted at the edge of the box with 15 minutes on the clock.

The home side were reduced to 10 men when skipper Blazej Augustyn committed a professional foul on Liam Boyce three minutes after the break.

But County were unable to take advantage of the extra man and Osman Sow (67) slotted the ball into the corner after exchanging passes with Jamie Walker to seal the win.

Kilmarnock stretched their unbeaten run to three games with a 2-1 victory over Dundee at Dens Park.

Dundee survived a major scare after just six minutes when goalkeeper Scott Bain was injured in a collision with Killie winger Greg Kiltie.

Bain was able to stay on the pitch, but was picking a Josh Magennis header out of his net three minutes later.

The visitors doubled their lead on 48 minutes when defender Steven Smith scored with a long-range shot.

Dundee pulled a goal back 14 minutes from the end when Rhys Healey netted with a header from substitute Paul McGowan's cross.

Hamilton's 10 men rescued a share of the points against Partick following a 1-1 draw at Firhill..

Former Accies goalkeeper Tomas Cerny had to be replaced 10 minutes before the break after suffering an injury.

And just before the interval Hamilton lost Lucas Tagliapietra when he pulled down David Amoo after he had made a mess of a clearance.

Amoo' was involved again when Thistle finally made the breakthrough when he delivered a low ball for Mathias Pogba to clip past Michael McGovern.

But just as Thistle appeared to have secured the points Dougie Imrie ran through their defence, and rounded substitute 'keeper Ryan Scully to score.

St Johnstone scored a last-gasp winner to see off Inverness Caley in a game of very few chances.

Liam Craig netted with the game's only shot on target, from the penalty spot, after he had been tripped inside the box.

The win was all the more impressive as Saints captain David Mackay has dismissed two minutes into the second half for a reckless challenge on Carl Tremarco.
