Police Scotland have made three arrests in connection to abusive messages sent to Scottish referee John Beaton.

Beaton contacted police after being targeted by threatening messages online in the wake of Rangers' 1-0 win over Celtic in the Old Firm derby on December 29.

The 36-year-old was at the centre of controversy after Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos escaped punishment for a series of incidents.

Beaton's work mobile phone number was leaked online, leading to dozens of messages which forced him to contact the authorities.

A Police Scotland statement read: "Following a Police Scotland investigation into abusive messages sent to a 36-year-old Scottish referee after the Rangers v Celtic football match on 29 December 2019, please note:

"Three men aged 31, 33 and 41 have been arrested and charged in connection with communications offences.

"They have all been released on an undertaking to appear in court at a later date.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal."
