Dundee United midfielder Paul Paton has been named the SPFL Player of the Month for September – beating off competition from players across all four tiers of Scottish football.
The 27-year-old Northern Ireland international enjoyed a good start to the season and finished the month with the second goal in the win over St Johnstone after playing a starring role in league and cup victories over rivals Dundee - a run of form which helped United into second in the league.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Paton hoped the award would act as both evidence of his progression over the last few seasons at Tannadice and as a catalyst for further progression.
"I think I’ve certainly improved, people may have looked at me and wondered if I could do it at SPFL level in central midfield," he said.
"This is only my third full year playing centre midfield and I’m enjoying it. I owe a lot to the management staff as well, they believed in me and brought me here to play centre-mid.
“I feel as if I’ve got another level in me yet - another level of performance that I’ve yet to reach - so I’m hoping to keep working hard and get there.”
The award rounds off a successful couple of weeks for Paton who established himself within the Northern Ireland squad and secured a new three-year deal at United.
