Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is a big fan of Scott Bain

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers wants Scott Bain to sign for Celtic on a permanent deal but is facing competition from Hearts and Hibs, Sky Sports News understands.

The goalkeeper joined Celtic on loan in January from Dundee and has made three Scottish Premier League appearances following Craig Gordon's knee injury.

The 26-year-old's contract at Dundee finishes at the end of this season but Rodgers insists he has a future in Glasgow.

Rodgers said: "Bain has shown all the attributes in his short time here. It was fast-tracked with that game against Rangers, you really get to see the personality of the player as well as his goalkeeping qualities.

"Thankfully for him and for us he has been able to show that. So he is definitely somebody we would want to keep here long term.

"He is a good age, he still has a lot of development and importantly he understands what we are trying to do here.

"He understands our game. So hopefully his representatives and the club can arrange a deal for him to be here."

However, Gordon, who was supposed to be out for 12 weeks, is set to make an early return.

"We are just going to check with Craig just to make sure everything is ok but he has been back in training and if he declares himself fit and ready then he will play," said Rodgers.

"He has come back a bit earlier than we thought so Scott has been great in the games he has played however with him not being able to play against Dundee [parent club] we have been looking to replace him.

"Craig has been brilliant on his rehab. He has come back and worked very hard and got himself ahead of schedule which is great news."
