Neil Lennon has held talks with Celtic over becoming the club's interim manager.
Lennon cancelled a planned trip to Qatar on Tuesday afternoon to discuss taking over from Brendan Rodgers, who is on the verge of becoming Leicester City's new manager.
Celtic are awaiting confirmation from Leicester and Rodgers before moving things forward officially but Lennon looks poised for a dramatic return to Celtic Park.
Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell confirmed to Sky Sports News that the club had spoken to the Northern Irishman.
"We're looking at a number of options but Neil would certainly be a strong candidate," said Lawwell.
"We've spoken to Neil and another couple of candidates."
The 47-year-old spent seven years at Celtic as a player and also managed the Bhoys between 2010 and 2014, winning three Scottish league titles and two Scottish Cups while in charge.
Lennon can take charge immediately after leaving Hibernian last month.
Celtic sit top of the Scottish Premiership, eight points clear of second-placed Rangers, and remain on course for a third successive domestic treble.
They travel to Hearts on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports Football.
