Rangers are aiming to appoint a new boss in the next 10 days and 46-year-old Portuguese manager Pedro Caixinha has emerged as the bookmakers’ favourite for the job.

Rangers parted company with Mark Warburton and his assistant David Weir three weeks ago and Frank McParland also left his post as director of football.

Former boss Alex McLeish and Norwich's Alex Neil have been linked with the Ibrox managerial post, and Sky sources understand Gary Rowett met with members of the Rangers board to discuss the vacancy on Tuesday.

But Caixinha, manager of Qatari side Al-Gharafa, is now odds-on to be handed the job.

The well-travelled Portuguese completed his coaching badges in Scotland and has previously served as an assistant manager at Sporting Lisbon, Panathinaikos, Rapid Bucharest and the Saudi Arabian national team.

"The Rangers board, I understand, have been quite impressed by him," said Sky Sports News HQ reporter Charles Paterson.

"I don't believe he has actually been offered the job yet. But there are some reports suggesting he could be appointed by the middle of next week and certainly Rangers are hoping to make an announcement on their new manager before the Old Firm game on March 12.
