Rangers boss Graeme Murty backs Alfredo Morelos over Celtic scoring record

Graeme Murty has backed Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos to break his Old Firm duck at Hampden on Sunday.

The Colombian leads Rangers' scoring charts this term with 18 goals but has yet to find the net against bitter rivals Celtic, with the 21-year-old guilty of spurning clear chances in each of the Ibrox side's three meetings with Brendan Rodgers' team this season.

Morelos was unable to bury a point-blank range header in Rangers' 2-0 loss in September, before failing to make the most of two more chances in the derby clash. He then missed a last-minute opening which would have rescued a point in the 3-2 defeat last month.

However, Murty has been impressed by his striker's strength of character and believes he will be able to put those misses to the back of his mind should another opportunity land his way during this weekend's Scottish Cup semi-final showdown, live on Sky Sports.

"I've seen Alfredo saying in the press that he is going to score - that's the mindset of a centre-forward," he said. "I believe in the old adage that you'd rather have centre-forwards in the position to miss chances than have them not getting there.

"I believe that Alfredo does get there, that we can find him in there and I do believe that given the opportunity, he could hit the back of the net for us.

"It's about making sure we give him those opportunities and when he gets those - and he may only get one - he takes it with both hands.

"He also needs to make sure the rest of his game is on point, because taking chances is just one part of what we need from him."
