Billy Dodds says the Rangers job is a huge gamble for Steven Gerrard.

Rangers have "no plan or direction" according to former striker Kris Boyd as Steven Gerrard continues to be linked to the managerial job at Ibrox.

The Glasgow club were thrashed 5-0 by rivals Celtic on Sunday as the Hoops claimed their seventh-successive Scottish Premiership title.

Boyd, who now plays for Kilmarnock, expressed bafflement at the goings on at his old club who are currently coached by interim boss Graeme Murty.

"Six months ago you are trying to get Derek McInnes, tried and tested in Scotland, knows the game inside out, and six months later you are away down the road trying to get a youth coach," he told PA Sport.

"No disrespect to Gerrard, but at this moment in time that's what he is.

"I don't think there is a clear direction or plan of where the club wants to go. It seems as if they are trying to grab everything to see if what you grab works rather than having a plan, a structure.

"I still don't know what [director of football] Mark Allen is doing. It would be interesting to see what's gone on in there with him.

"I think the Rangers fans would want to know exactly what's going on.

"If you are the director of football and you try to bring in a manager who has been over the course and distance, knows exactly what is going on in Scotland, then all of a sudden you are going to Liverpool to take their youth coach, it doesn't add up.

"There needs to be a plan and direction and at this moment in time I don't think anybody knows."

Boyd, 34, is looking to add to his 23 goals this season when he returns to Ibrox with Kilmarnock on Saturday.

"I have not really been one for setting targets because I think you can only disappoint yourself," he added.

"As a striker, you want to score as many as you can so I will go to Ibrox on Saturday looking to score."
