Steven Gerrard says he wants backing from Dave King who claims that Rangers are on the verge of dominating Scottish football.

Steven Gerrard says he needs the backing of Rangers chairman Dave King in the transfer market following a progressive debut season.

Rangers go to fifth-placed Hearts on Saturday lunchtime with five games remaining and 11 points behind leaders Celtic.

Seven points would guarantee Rangers a second-placed finish in Gerrard's debut season, but the former Liverpool captain believes they will need to spend to challenge Celtic.

Gerrard said: "I'm not a guy with a magic wand, everyone knows we will need backing.

"There has been progress made in a lot of areas which I am happy with and I have also made it clear where we need to improve in the eleven moving forward.

"We want to try and take maximum points on Saturday and then we will look forward to the next game. We don't have to look at the focus and targets for next season now. Things will happen behind the scenes in terms of targets, pre-season and transfers."

Gerrard refused to make his own prediction of what he thinks his Rangers team are capable of in the coming years.

He added: "I respect and welcome the chairman's opinion, we had an in depth chat about where we are. We had a very honest and open conversation and I look forward to catching up with him face-to-face in the coming weeks.

"In terms of 'tangible Scottish dominance', I don't think it's sensible to make any predictions.

"We want to finish this season as strongly as we can and then we will get ourselves best prepared for next season."
