Ricksen wants to help Oranje

Fernando Ricksen believes Dick Advocaat should reconsider his position to exclude him from the Dutch national team, as the Rangers man feels he could lift the spirit of the squad.

The defender-cum-midfielder has been omitted from the Oranje's final Euro 2004 qualification squad against Moldova after reportedly angering Advocaat with his actions following the match with Belarus in June.

Ricksen feels he is being wrongly made the scapegoat for the troubles, and claims his country could suffer for it.

With Holland set to face a two-legged play-off in their bid to reach Euro 2004, following their clash with Moldova, Ricksen would love to be back in the fold.

"I am still disappointed I did not get picked for the last two Holland games," Ricksen told the Daily Record. "I should be in the team.

"I would like to bring some spirit back into the Dutch team. We have fantastic players but the work-rate and mental toughness could be better."

Defending himself once again, Ricksen continued: "We all went out celebrating after Rangers' last match. Ronald de Boer and other players didn't have to report until Wednesday with Holland, but I was told to come and train on the Monday.

"I don't know why but I know I did not get enough rest. I did my hamstrings on the Monday and did not get fit on time to play on the Saturday night.

"As I was still in 'treblemood' I went out on the Saturday after the game in Minsk with other Dutch internationals. The season had ended and I didn't think there was anything wrong with going for a drink."

It had been suggested that the hijinks involved Ricksen drinking out of a flower vase.

The player, though, says the incident was blown out of all proportion.

He added: "That was exaggerated. Let's face it, tap water in Belarus isn't all that great. Do you really think I would drink a bloody flower vase of water?

"That would be detrimental to my health. In truth, not a lot happened that night.

"There were seven players who had enjoyed a good drink but we did nothing which shocked the local people. And if one of my team members prefers to blurt the story out to some journalist instead of talking to me, then so be it.

"It's so cheap and so easy for them. Fernando is the one with the reputation he has a screw loose and he'll take all the hammering from the coach. And because they know I don't give a s**t they think I am not going to moan about it either."
