Ostenstad quits Rangers

Rangers have released Norwegian striker Egil Ostenstad after just seven months at Ibrox.

Ostenstad moved to Glasgow on a free transfer from Blackburn Rovers in the summer, but has failed to make an impact at Ibrox.

The former Southampton ace made only 17 appearances during his time at the club with his most of his chances coming from the substitute bench.

Gers boss Alex McLeish is looking at trimming his squad after a disastrous season and has decided to let Ostenstad leave three months before the end of his contract.

The 31-year-old is now expected to join Viking Stavanger before the Norwegian transfer window closes, but Ostenstad wants a month off from football to regain his full fitness.

"I'm so tired of football right now. I need vacation, meanwhile my Achilles need to rest if I'm to be free of my injury. That will at least take a month," Ostenstad told Stavanger Aftenblad.

Viking boss Kjell Inge Olsen confirmed the club still are interested in Ostenstad, but that the striker was prove he still has the motivation to play before a deal can be done.

"Egil must first of all decide whether he wants to make an effort. His attitude has been a bit unclear," said Olsen.

"Therefore are we also working with other alternatives up front."
