Nigel Hasselbaink believes he has made the right choice in linking up with Europa League-bound St Johnstone on a two-year contract. The Dutch forward caught the eye with St Mirren last season, having cut his teeth in Scottish football with Hamilton. The 21-year-old was determined to take on a new challenge this summer, after allowing his contract with St Mirren to run down, and had a number of options to consider. He decided to snub a switch to England in favour of linking up with Steve Lomas' Saints and is convinced that he has taken the best decision for his promising career. He told The Courier: "I had a good feeling about St Johnstone and I am the kind of person who acts on my gut feelings. The manager impressed me and I liked what he had to say when I spoke to him. "Everything felt right. I liked the way St Johnstone played last season and I think I can be a success here.

Interest

"There was interest from clubs in League One but I think the SPL is better than that. I want to play at the highest level I can so hopefully, if I do well with St Johnstone, that can happen." He added: "I feel I have done alright since I came to Scottish football. "It is different to what I was used to in Holland, but it has been good and I think I'm improving as a player. I am still young so I have plenty more improvement to come." Meanwhile, Chris Millar has handed St Johnstone a welcome boost by penning a new contract. The 29-year-old was expected to leave the club after rejecting an initial offer of fresh terms, with his heart set on securing a move to Australia. No switch has been put in place, though, and he has now agreed a one-year deal with the Saints.
