Mario Balotelli scored a late winner and was then sent off as Nice returned to the top of Ligue 1 with a 2-1 win over Lorient.

The Italian striker has been in a rich vein of form since swapping Liverpool for the French Riviera over the summer and he made the headlines once again on Sunday.

Balotelli dribbled past Steven Moreira before firing home from the edge of the area for his sixth goal in five appearances.

That led to the 26-year-old receiving his first booking after taking off his shirt as he celebrated his 86th-minute goal and he was then give a second caution after becoming involved in a stoppage-time altercation with Moreira.

Ricardo Pereira had earlier put the hosts in front on 11 minutes before Benjamin Moukandjo levelled with a right-footed shot from Mohamed Mara's pass (61).

Elsewhere, Angers and Marseille played out a 1-1 draw at the Stade Jean-Bouin.

Florian Thauvin - on loan from Newcastle - had put the visitors in front with a deflected shot that looped over home goalkeeper Denis Petric in the 64th minute.

But Angers battled to the end and grabbed an equaliser through substitute Pierrick Capelle in the third minute of stoppage time to deny Marseille a first away win.
