Marseille missed the chance to reclaim top spot in Ligue 1 after they slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Nice on Friday.
Victory at the Allianz Riviera would have seen them move above Lyon into top spot, but Marcelo Bielsa's side offered very little in attack and slipped to a sixth defeat of the season.
Nice, who have yet to register recent signing Hatem Ben Arfa, saw goals from Romain Genevois and Niklas Hult ensure they ended a difficult week in a positive manner with victory over their rivals from along the coast.
Even the second half dismissal of Kevin Gomis' was not to deny the home side who held their nerve after Marseille winger Florian Thauvin pulled a goal back late on. It proved little more than a consolation for the visitors and Nice claimed all three points.
Marseille stay second in the table, while Nice are 13 points behind them in ninth place.
