French title chasers land promising Dutch striker

Dutch striker John Verhoek has left his homeland and signed for Ligue 1 high-fliers Rennes. The 21-year-old, who is reported to have cost €500,000 euros [£432,000], has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract with his new employers. He took part in his first training session in France on Wednesday, allowing him to acquaint himself with his team-mates. Rennes have high hopes for Verhoek, with the youngster having plundered 10 goals in 17 games for Den Bosch this term.

Patience

Coach Pierre Dreossi has called on the club's supporters to give his latest recruit time to settle, though, with it important that expectations do not become unrealistic. He told the club's official website: "I ask for a little patience with him because there is a big difference between the Dutch second division and Ligue 1. "It's a gamble for the future. He is not there to replace Asamoah Gyan [who moved to Sunderland last August]. "He is an unknown player but we know his potential. With a little time, he can become a good player at Stade Rennais."
