Shorumnu blasts Super Eagles selection

NIGERIA goalkeeper Ike Shorumnu has hit out at new national team boss Adegboye Onigbinde for excluding key players ahead of next Tuesday's friendly against Paraguay at Loftus Road.

Shorumnu, who was Nigeria's number one during the African Cup of Nations in January, is not pleased that Onigbinde left out Borussia Dortmund's Sunday Oliseh and Paris Saint-Germain's Jay Jay Okocha and considered the omissions to be 'a bad decision.'

Nigeria have been drawn in the so-called 'Group of Death' with England, Argentina, and Sweden in Japan this June and The Super Eagles' disappointing performance in Mali this year might mean an early exit from the finals.

The FC Luzern custodian said: "Dropping Oliseh and Okocha is a big setback for Nigeria.

"I am surprised that he (Onigbinde) can drop important players like that. Nigeria still needs their experience."

Shorumnu was also left out of Nigeria's squad for the Loftus Road friendly but is "not stressed" over being excluded as well.

He added: "I am not bothered about not being invited for the friendly against Paraguay.

"The coaches know my qualities and want to give other goalkeepers a chance to prove themselves.

"In any case, it is for the manager to decide who is Nigeria's number one goalkeeper."

Shorumnu was criticised heavily in Nigeria for his poor performance at the Cup of Nations, but he is determined to keep his place in the squad come this summer's World Cup finals.

He said: "Many people felt that I should not have played against Senegal after what had happened to me in the quarter-final match against Ghana.

"But the most important thing now is to play well for my new club and maintain the confidence my team mates in the national team have in me."

Shorumnu warns that this summer's finals in Korea and Japan are 'not a jamboree' and advises Onigbinde not to overlook Nigeria's most experienced players. He added: "It was funny to hear comments in the Nigerian newspapers that some of us in the Super Eagles are old and tired.

"It is good we have young talent in the team but we need experienced players at the World Cup.

"We will be facing the best teams and players in Japan."
