Nantes players and fans paid tribute to Emiliano Sala in an emotional training session on Thursday

Nantes players have paid tribute to Emiliano Sala in an emotional first training session since a plane carrying the striker went missing near the Channel Islands on Monday.

Sala had lunch with Nantes' players and coaching staff at La Joneliere, the club's training ground, on Monday before departing to join his new club Cardiff City.

Nantes were due to train on Wednesday ahead of their French Cup fixture against L'Entente, but both events were cancelled.

The players returned to training on Thursday, though, beginning the session with a minute's silence away from the 300 fans that had gathered.

The supporters had laid out yellow flowers to represent the club's nickname 'the Canaries'.

They were then welcomed into the ground to watch the training session and began applauding Nantes' players, before the squad then approached the supporters and club captain Valentin Rongier gave a public speech to the spectators.

Nicolas Pallois, Nantes defender, and Sala's best friend, was training with the rest of the squad.
