Dani Parejo's 88th minute penalty handed Valencia their first win of the season thanks to a 2-1 victory over Alaves at the Mestalla.

Valencia dismissed coach Pako Ayestaran on Tuesday with the side rooted to the bottom of La Liga having lost their opening four games of the season.

Salvador Gonzalez Marco took over as caretaker for the fourth time and his latest spell in charge started with a much needed three points.

Valencia took the lead in the 28th minute after Víctor Laguardia headed into his own net but the visitors were back on level terms just before the break with Gaizka Toquero grabbing the equaliser.

The match appeared to be heading for a draw until Zakaria Bakkali was brought down by Marcos Llorente and Parejo stepped up to seal a much needed three points for the hosts and move them off the bottom of the table.

Gerard Moreno grabbed the winner as Espanyol claimed their first La Liga win of the season with a 2-1 success at promoted Osasuna.
