The European and La Liga champions have a bye in the first round and will start the competition in the semis in Yokohama, Japan, on December 17.

River Plate of Argentina, the Copa Libertadores champions who are playing in the competition for the first time, also start in the semi-finals.

They face the African Champions League winners, Auckland City of New Zealand or the J-League winner in Osaka.

Auckland, the Oceania Champions League champions, kick the tournament off on 10 December against the J-League winners.

It will be the 12th time the tournament has been held, and the seventh time it has been hosted by Japan.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter said: "To bring the best football clubs in the world together is a great achievement. 'The basis of our game is the clubs. Club football is part of football, and therefore of FIFA, so it was important for us to organise this tournament."

The final will take place in Yokohama on December 20. Real Madrid won the competition last year, beating Argentinian side San Lorenzo 2-0 in the final.
