The hit-man had been told that he was surplus to requirements at the Amsterdam club towards the end of last season, and has been linked with a couple of clubs during the summer, including FC Twente.
The 30-year-old spent time on loan with La Liga outfit Sevilla last term but failed to impress the Spaniards and returned prematurely to the Dutch club.
The former Vitesse Arnhem striker, who was the highest-paid player at Ajax, suffered further misery in Spain, after he was arrested for traffic offences.
He made things worse by 'insulting and injuring' police officers who tried to arrest him after the offence had been committed.
He will now have to rebuild his career away from Ajax but may look to stay in Holland with Twente showing an interest in the man who has made 55 appearances for his country.
