Valencia full-back Jose Luis Gaya is excited for the start of the Gary Neville era at the Mestalla.

Neville was appointed last week as Valencia head coach for the rest of the season, but only took his first training session on Monday with more than 3,000 fans in attendance.

The Manchester United great put his players through their paces along with brother Phil, who was already on the coaching staff in Valencia, and Miguel Angel Angulo as they prepare for a vital Champions League date on Wednesday.

Neville's first game in charge is a must-win Group H clash with Lyon, although even victory at the Mestalla will not be enough to see them through to the last 16 if Gent beat Zenit St Petersburg in their final group match.

Gaya revealed Neville's lack of Spanish had not proved a problem in his first coaching session and said Neville is determined to make Valencia a tougher side to beat.

"We are full of excitement and desire to get things going with him," Spain U21 international Gaya said.

John Richardson admits no one can tell whether or not Gary Neville will be a success at Valencia, but knows he'll give it a great shot

"The past is past and a new era is beginning.

"He wants the team to be compact, hard-working and supportive of each other and Valencia to be a tough opponent.

"We have to be able to have a chance of keeping the ball as otherwise it would be impossible. Let's see what idea the boss has and we will follow it to the death."
