Veteran striker Luca Toni scored in either half as Verona pulled off a surprise 2-0 win over Napoli on Sunday.
Verona took the lead in the seventh minute as Toni capitalised on a mix-up between Mariano Andujar and Giandomenico Mesto to score.
Toni doubled the advantage early in the second half as he beat Andujar with his left-footed strike.
Gokhan Inler had an effort saved by Francesco Benussi before substitute Manolo Gabbiadini struck the post.
Verona ended the game with 10 men after Jacopo Sala was shown a second yellow card but still took the points.
Inter Milan were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Cesena, who took the lead through Gregoire Defrel but were pegged back by a Rodrigo Palacio equaliser.
Chievo pulled themselves further away from the drop zone thanks to a shock 2-0 win at Genoa where Alberto Paloschi hit a second-half brace to secure just their seventh win of the season.
Nicola Sansone scored twice in the first half as Sassuolo hammered 10-man Parma 4-1 to boost their chances of avoiding relegation.
The Italian forward put the home side ahead in the 24th minute before Andi Lila pulled Parma level two minutes later.
Sansone put Sassuolo back in front in the 36th minute and then earned a penalty in the 61st minute after being brought down by Parma goalkeeper Antonio Mirante.
Mirante was shown a straight red for that foul, with Domenico Berardi converting the spot-kick.
Simone Missiroli capped off a wonderful afternoon for the hosts by scoring their fourth four minutes later.
Atalanta survived the sending-off of midfielder Carlos Carmona to earn a valuable point at home to Udinese.
With the score level at 0-0 with 14 minutes to go, Carmona was shown a straight red for his challenge on Udinese's Brazilian midfielder Allan.
However, Udinese, who had gone close in the first half when Silvan Widmer's shot crashed off the post with goalkeeper Marco Sportiello beaten, could not make their numerical advantage count as the match finished goalless.
