Bologna won promotion back to Serie A, one year after the club was relegated, after holding on for a 1-1 draw with Pescara in the second leg of their play-off final.

With the first leg ending 0-0, Bologna only needed another draw as, in the event of a tie, the team which finishes higher in the regular season gains promotion.

Bologna finished fourth, seven points ahead of seventh-placed Pescara.

Bologna took the lead in the first half thanks to Gianluca Sansone but Pescara substitute Cristian Pasquato equalised 10 minutes into the second half to leave Bologna fighting for the valuable draw.

They had to play the final 25 minutes with 10 men after Ibrahima Mbaye was sent off.

Bologna, bought by New York lawyer Joe Tacopina and Montreal Impact President Joey Saputo in October, will now join Serie B champions Carpi and runners-up Frosinone in the top Italian league.
