Former Milan stalwart joins MLS new boys

Veteran Italian defender Alessandro Nesta has joined MLS side Montreal Impact after signing an 18-month contract. The 36-year-old recently left AC Milan after a decade of success at the San Siro, where he helped secure two Serie A and UEFA Champions League titles. Capped 78 times by Italy, he was part of the squad that won the 2006 World Cup. This is the Impact's first season in the MLS, but they are currently third from bottom of the Eastern Conference. Despite offers from European clubs, Nesta was happy to cross the Atlantic and join a squad with a strong Italian flavour, with Marco Di Vaio, Matteo Ferrari and Bernardo Corradi all on the books.

Offers

"I'm very happy to be here," said Nesta. "Despite some offers to continue my career in Europe, I was looking for a new challenge and wanted to play in the MLS. "Upon visiting my friend Marco Di Vaio to see him play his first game with Montreal, I met great people in this club. "I really liked what I saw and I was convinced Montreal was where I wanted to be."
