BUFFON DEFUSES NAZI ROW

ITALIAN international keeper Gianluigi Buffon has moved to defuse the furore concerning his decision to wear the number 88 shirt next season, by reverting to 77 instead.

The Parma star sparked controversy by opting for `88` because of its association with former Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, with `H` being the eighth letter of the alphabet and `Heil Hitler` the traditional cry of the Nazis.

Although claiming that this was not the reason for selecting that shirt, explaining it was merely a personal choice, Buffon has decided to wear 77 in Serie A next term, another strange decision.

Furthermore, `77` is known as `ladies` legs` in Italian bingo, and some commentators have joked that he may now upset the feminist movement!

The episode was surely avoidable and Buffon will be looking to concentrate on his playing duties, and replacing Francesco Toldo in the national side in the near future.
