Szalai, who is under contract at Mainz until 2015, has scored 13 goals in the Bundesliga this season and has regularly been linked with bigger clubs.
The Hungarian has been mooted as a summer transfer target for Schalke and Heldt would be interested in signing the 25-year-old, if the price is right.
"Definitely, Adam Szalai of Mainz is a super player," Heldt told Reviersport. "He is one of those players I would like to sign for Schalke.
"Having said that, I do know Adam Szalai would cost us a transfer fee of €8million (£6.8m).
"Of course, participating in the UEFA Champions League next season would be a financial boost for any club like us!"
Schalke currently occupy the final Champions League qualification position in the Bundesliga and are one point ahead of fifth-placed Freiburg.
