Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has backed Carlo Ancelotti to succeed at Bayern Munich if he were to take over from Pep Guardiola.

Guardiola's contract expires at the end of the season, and reports in Germany and Italy have linked Ancelotti with the Bundesliga champions, with Sport Bild claiming they have already been in contact with the Italian in case Guardiola decides to leave.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said this week he was "optimistic" the former Barcelona coach would sign a new deal at the Allianz Arena, but speculation continues to mount over his future.

And Kroos, signed from Bayern by Ancelotti when he was in charge at the Bernabeu, believes the Italian would be a good fit for his former club.

"Certainly, a world-class coach like him would only consider one, maybe two clubs in Germany," he told Sport Bild.

"He's very international, also speaks English. Why shouldn't he be successful with a top club like Bayern?

"He would in any case be a very interesting man for the Bundesliga."

Bayern suffered their first defeat of the season on Tuesday night, going down 2-0 at Arsenal in the Champions League as their run of 12-straight wins ended.

Guardiola was heavily linked with the Manchester City job, before Manuel Pellegrini signed a new contract over the summer, while Ancelotti was linked with Liverpool, along with first choice Jurgen Klopp, following the sacking of Brendan Rodgers and the former Chelsea coach has previously said he would relish a return to the Premier League.
