Thomas Muller has been labelled as 'irreplaceable' to Bayern Munich, according to the club's director of sport Matthias Sammer.

According to British newspaper reports, Chelsea want to sign the Germany international to replace Diego Costa - who claimed in October that a move to the Premier League would be "very tempting", but Sammers has stated the World Cup winner's importance to the Bundesliga champions.

"Thomas Muller embodies everything which distinguishes FC Bayern Munich," said Sammers. "He is an absolute role model, an absolute gem and he's irreplaceable."

Former Bayern Munich defender Lothar Matthaus has called for Muller to stay at Bayern for his entire career, urging the 26-year-old to turn down an approaches from Manchester United or Chelsea.

Muller, who is contracted to Bayern until June 2019, netted the opener in Saturday's 2-0 win against Hertha Berlin to claim his 13th league goal, and is set to smash his personal record having never gone past his current tally in a single Bundesliga season.

He has also scored in each of his last five competitive outings, taking his astonishing personal haul to 20 goals in 21 games in all competitions this season.

Muller, 26, already has a World Cup winners medal in his collection and can play on the wing or as a striker, as he proved by scoring a hat-trick against Portugal at the 2014 World Cup.
