Champions League: Bayern Munich see off Roma to make knockout stages

Bayern Munich swept into the knockout stages of the Champions League with a comfortable 2-0 win over Roma after goals from Franck Ribery and Mario Gotze.
Pep Guardiola's side beat the Italian giants 7-1 in the reverse fixture two weeks ago and this time settled for a less eye-catching but equally effective display at the Allianz Arena.
Roma, who brought on former England and Chelsea defender Ashley Cole at half-time, produced a better performance in defence and attack, but still lacked the required penetration to trouble Bayern.
The home side predictably dominated possession, even with Thomas Muller rested and Arjen Robben out with a stomach problem.
Bayern finally went ahead in the 38th minute when a galloping David Alaba run down the left flank ended with a precise cutback for Ribery to guide the ball home off the inside of the post.
Goetze secured the victory midway through the second half after his clever, lifted finish over Roma goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski crowned a fine run and cross from Robert Lewandowski.
Philipp Lahm and Alaba both went close with efforts to make Bayern's victory even more comprehensive, while substitute Gervinho created Roma's only real opportunity but outstanding goalkeeper Manuel Neuer produced a trademark stop to deny Radja Nainggolan.
The result means the five-time winners, who still have to face Premier League champions Manchester City again, have wrapped up Group E with two matches to spare.
