Hamburg have confirmed the appointment of Thorsten Fink as their new coach after negotiating a compensation package with Basel.

Former Basel boss says his goodbyes instead of training

Hamburg have confirmed the appointment of Thorsten Fink as their new coach after negotiating a compensation package with Basel. The 43-year-old former Bayern Munich midfielder has been named the permanent successor to Michael Oenning, who was sacked in September. Basel president Bernhard Heusler had said on Tuesday an approach from Hamburg had been turned down. The situation has now changed and the German club, who had also talked with Louis van Gaal, Marco van Basten, Morten Olsen, Ricardo Moniz and Horst Hrubesch, have a new boss.

Philosophy

Hamburg director of sport Frank Arnesen said: "Thorsten Fink was the coach I wanted. "He fits in with HSV and with our philosophy. He will improve the team and develop us further." Bottom-of-the-table Hamburg initially appointed Rodolfo Cardoso on a caretaker basis, but his provisional licence expired after two league games. Arnesen will coach the team for Sunday's match at Freiburg following the return to action after the international break, but Fink is then expected to take charge. "It now happened very quickly. I will not do the morning training (at Basel) today and will have to say goodbye to the team," Fink told Sport1 on Thursday.
