Pierre Littbarski has been named as assistant manager to Steve McClaren at Wolfsburg.
The German has a wealth of coaching experience around the world, having spent time in charge of Yokohama, Sydney, Avispa Fukuoka, Saipa Tehran and, more recently, FC Vaduz in the Swiss league.
He previously spent 18 months at the helm of Duisburg, but this appointment marks his return to Germany after seven years away.
"This return to the Bundesliga is a dream come true for me," admitted the 50-year-old, a World Cup winner in 1990.
"After talking with Steve McClaren, I knew the chemistry between us was right.
"And of course it is an attractive challenge to work at a very ambitious club like Wolfsburg."
Language
McClaren also stated that he had struck up a good relationship with Littbarski right from their very first meeting.
"I have always stressed that the team off the field is equally important as the team on it," said the first English coach in the Bundesliga.
"We had a good discussion about what his tasks will be and I liked Pierre straight away.
"His immense experience makes him a perfect solution for this position, especially since he can help me a lot with his knowledge of English, until I get a grasp of German."
Breaking the language barrier was the priority of the Wolves' managing director, Dieter Hoeness, which is why Littbarski was his ideal candidate.
He said: "He speaks the language of the players and he also speaks the language of the coach."
