PSV had to settle for a point in their bid to close the gap on top two Feyenoord and Ajax after being held to a goalless draw at Roda JC.
Phillip Cocu's reigning champions, who began the day four points behind second-placed Ajax, were denied on several occasions by Roda goalkeeper Ben van Leer.
But Roda were not without their own chances at the Parkstad Limburg Stadium and held on for their sixth successive league draw.
Feyenoord, the league leaders, and Ajax play at home on Sunday, against Sparta Rotterdam and Groningen respectively.
Stijn Wuytens salvaged a point for AZ Alkmaar, who hit back three times to draw 3-3 at Excelsior and extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine matches.
Wuytens headed home a 76th-minute equaliser after Hicham Faik had given Excelsior the lead for the third time.
Stanley Elbers' early opener for Excelsior was soon cancelled out by Robert Muhren and after the home side regained the lead through Nigel Hasselbaink's 26th-minute penalty, Muamer Tankovic levelled for the visitors before the break.
Reza Ghoochannejhad scored twice as Heerenveen secured their first win in five league games with a 3-1 victory at Go Ahead Eagles.
Darren Maatsen gave the hosts an early lead, but former Charlton striker Ghoochannejhad struck his sixth and seventh goals of the season in the space of eight first-half minutes and Yuki Kobayashi completed the scoring on the stroke of half-time.
The win moves Heerenveen up one place to fourth in the table, while Go Ahead remain rooted to the bottom after losing six of their last seven league games.
Vitesse Arnhem climbed up to seventh following a 3-1 home win against PEC Zwolle.
Lewis Baker's 32nd-minute penalty and Yuning Zhang's header put Vitesse 2-0 up at the break and, although Bart Schenkeveld (67) pulled one back for the visitors, Nathan added the home side's third in stoppage time.
