Adam Maher and Memphis Depay both scored twice and Jurgen Locadia added the other to finally bring some cheer to last season's Eredivisie runner-up.

Phillip Cocu's side had won just once in 12 games in all competitions, including a 1-0 home defeat to Bulgarian club Chornomorets to dump them out of the Europa league in midweek.

PSV were 4-0 up by half-time and a rough afternoon for Utrecht was made worse by the second-half dismissals of Steve De Ridder and Dave Bulthuis, who had at least scored on 73 minutes.

Leaders Vitesse Arnhem extended their winning run in the league to six games by beating NAC Breda 3-2.

They fell behind to a 24th-minute Jordy Buijs penalty but on-loan Chelsea forward Lucas Piazon replied from the spot 11 minutes later before firing Vitesse ahead on 50 minutes.

Kelvin Leerdam added a third on 84 minutes, which proved crucial when Anthony Lurling netted a minute from the end.

Ajax are two points adrift of Vitesse as they increased their own winning run to five games, Davy Klaassen's injury-time strike sealing a 2-1 win over Cambuur Leeuwarden.

The champions led through Lasse Schone's 40th-minute strike until eight minutes from the end when Michiel Hemmen equalised. There was a late twist as Marcel Ritzmaier saw red and Klaasen scored the winner in injury-time.

Graziano Pelle's seventh-minute strike was enough for Feyenoord to beat FC Groningen 1-0 while Heracles Almelo won 2-0 over AZ Alkmaar thanks to goals from Bryan Linssen (12) and Oussama Tannane (90).
