Feyenoord put further daylight between themselves and rival European hopefuls FC Twente with a 3-1 home win over the Enschede outfit on Sunday.

With PSV Eindhoven and Ajax having broken clear at the top of the Eredivisie, it is the race for third spot that will now hold most interest for a host of teams - including both Feyenoord and 2010 champions FC Twente.

And it is Feyenoord who currently occupy that spot after goals from Lex Immers (36), Jens Toornstra (58) and Jean-Paul Boetius (61) helped them see off FC Twente and leapfrog back above PEC Zwolle, who won on Saturday.

FC Twente, who had briefly drawn level through Orlando Engelaar's 50th-minute equaliser at De Kuip, are sixth after the defeat, six points behind Feyenoord.

Heerenveen moved up to eighth with a 2-1 win at Utrecht, goals from Luciano Slagveer (41) and Sam Larsson (65) putting the visitors in control before Willem Janssen struck a last-minute consolation from the penalty spot for the beaten hosts.

Also on Sunday, Excelsior recorded their first Eredivisie win since October as goals from Tom van Weert (14), Daryl van Mieghem (70) and substitute Carlo De Reuver (84) earned them a 3-0 win at Heracles, while Willem II inflicted a fourth successive loss on Go Ahead Eagles with a 1-0 victory.

Robert Braber struck the only goal of that game just before the hour-mark, with Go Ahead Eagles finishing the match with 10 men following Giliano Wijnaldum's sending off 12 minutes from time.
