The Greek forward has been told he has no future with Ajax, having spent a spell on loan at Sevilla last season, and Twente could be ready to offer him an Eredivisie lifeline.
Twente are in desperate need of an experienced striker capable of leading their attacking line next term.
"We don't just want any striker," Tukkers chairman Herman Wessels told Twente Courant Tubantia. "It has to be someone that fits in with us and makes us better."
Reports are suggesting Machlas, who is well down the pecking order at Ajax and has not even been handed a squad number, could be offered the chance of first-team football at Twente.
Twente`s forward-line consists of Thijs Houwing, 22, Collins John, 17, and Kim Christensen, 23, so the need for a proven striker is obvious.
