Former Dutch international handed permanent role

Frank de Boer has been appointed manager of Ajax until the summer of 2014 following Martin Jol's departure last month. The 40-year-old former Dutch international, an assistant to Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk, took charge of Ajax on a temporary basis after Jol's exit. De Boer played 11 seasons in the Ajax first-team between 1988 and 1998, as well as spending time at Rangers, Barcelona and Galatasaray. The former defender played over 400 official league games and secured numerous prizes including league titles, the Uefa Cup, the UEFA Champions League and the World Club Championship with the Dutch giants. The manager, who won 112 caps for Holland, has kept Ajax in contention for the Eredivisie title since taking the helm, with the Dutch giants currently in fourth. De Boer said on the club's official website: "I'm not surprised by this appointment as the intention of both sides was there from the start and we only needed to work out some details and that happened today." Ajax director Rick van der Boog revealed former youth coach De Boer had been their main candidate to succeed Jol, adding: "Frank knows the club as player and youth coach and knows exactly what is demanded and he knows what is going on in our youth department and which players are developing." The Amsterdam club have also appointed Hennie Spijkerman, who was formerly technical director at South African club Ajax Cape Town, as assistant manager.
