Groningen's Timo Letschert was the first player to see red in the 11th minute but Mitchell Dijks' dismissal for the hosts on 31 minutes led to the first goal of the day as Nick Van der Velden converted the resulting penalty.
Substitute Yannick Wildschut (52) and Kenny Otigba (55) then fired Heerenveen into the lead before Johan Kappelhof made it 2-2 with 34 minutes remaining.
Alfred Finnbogason scored a penalty in the 72nd minute and, after Tjaronn Chery received his marching orders 12 minutes from time, the Icelandic forward found the space to add a fourth and final goal just before the final whistle.
Struggling Feyenoord had to scrap to avoid a fourth league defeat with Bruno Martins Indi leaving it late to salvage a 3-3 draw at NEC Nijmegen.
Lex Immers (26) and Samuel Stefanik (30) traded goals in the first half with Jean-Paul Boetius (67) and Victor Palsson (69) repeating the trick in the second, but Stefanik fired NEC into the lead for the first time with only 13 minutes left.
With time ticking away, centre-back Martins Indi popped up with his first goal of the season to grab a stabilising point for Ronald Koeman's side.
NAC Breda stunned 10-man Roda JC with a comprehensive 5-1 win at the Parkstad Limburg Stadion.
Roda would lead for less than a minute. Mitchell Donald's 44th-minute goal was swiftly rubbed out by Kees Kwakman before Elson Hooi (66), Mats Seuntjens (70), Stipe Perica (86) and Jeffrey Sarpong (88) plundered the second-half goals.
Frank Demouge was sent off for the hosts in the 71st minute.
AZ Alkmaar ran out easy 3-0 winners over Go Ahead Eagles.
Aron Johannsson converted a 31st-minute penalty with Viktor Elm and substitute Steven Berghuis rubber-stamping the win in second-half stoppage time.
Elsewhere, Steve De Ridder bagged a first-half brace to edge FC Utrecht to a 2-1 win over RKC Waalwijk. Remy Amieux hit the consolation goal on the hour mark.
