Mathias Pogba struck the game's only goal as Sparta Rotterdam became the first team this year to beat leaders Feyenoord in the Eredivisie.
Pogba, brother of Manchester United midfielder Paul, headed home Jerson Cabral's cross in the first minute to halt Feyenoord's 10-game winning league run.
Feyenoord, whose only other previous league defeat this season was at Go Ahead Eagles in November, squandered numerous goalscoring chances in either half and Sparta goalkeeper Roy Kortsmit pulled off a string of outstanding saves.
Sparta's win was an even bigger surprise given they had not triumphed at the Het Kasteel Stadium in 2017 and had won only one of their previous 12 league games.
Second-placed Ajax failed to take full advantage of Feyenoord's slip-up as they needed a late equaliser from Davy Klaassen to salvage a point in a 1-1 draw at Groningen.
Bryan Linssen gave Groningen the lead early in the second half and Klaassen levelled with his 15th goal of the season in the 82nd minute.
Groningen held on with 10 men in the closing stages after defender Samir Memisevic received a straight red card for his foul on Daley Sinkgraven.
Ajax, who extended their unbeaten league run to nine matches, trail Feyenoord by four points.
FC Utrecht remain fourth as they were held 1-1 at home against bottom club Den Haag, who ended their six-game losing run.
Den Haag took a first-half lead through Dion Malone, but Richairo Zivkovic equalised for Utrecht before the interval.
Excelsior stay a point above Den Haag following their 1-1 draw at AZ Alkmaar, where Mike van Duinen hauled them level in the 60th minute after goalkeeper Warner Hahn's own goal had given the home side a half-time lead.
NEC Nijmegen halted a five-game losing run by coming from behind to beat Heracles 3-1.
