Go Ahead Eagles can only strive for a play-off place in their unlikely bid to avoid relegation from the Eredivisie after they were beaten 3-2 at home by Groningen.

The away side went in at the break 1-0 up through Mimoun Mahi, before a late flurry of goals saw Sam Henriks equalise, Jesper Drost put Groningen back in front, Darren Maatsen level things up again and Mahi then notch the winner in stoppage time.

It leaves the rock-bottom Go Ahead Eagles, having played 32 of 34 fixtures, seven points adrift of safety.

And they are five points behind both 17th-placed NEC, who have also played 32 games, and 16th-placed Sparta Rotterdam, who have played 31 ahead of Sunday's home clash with ADO Den Haag.

NEC lost 1-0 at home against Excelsior, with Mike van Duinen notching the goal just before the hour mark. Excelsior are now 12th, six points clear of the play-off places.

Four points clear are PEC Zwolle, who slipped to 14th with a 2-1 home loss to Heracles Almelo. Samuel Armenteros scored twice after the break before Ted van de Pavert's reply with four minutes left.

AZ Alkmaar are up to fifth after coming from behind to triumph 2-1 at home against seventh-placed FC Twente.

A hectic finale saw a change in fortunes for Twente's Joachim Andersen, who had given his side the lead just after the hour.

After a Peet Bijen own-goal made it 1-1 in the 81st minute, Andersen was sent off in the 86th and AZ then snatched victory in stoppage time via substitute Fred Friday.
