The Amsterdam club were 3-2 winners at home to ADO Den Haag, but Feyenoord's 2-0 success at PSV Eindhoven ensures they remain six points behind the leaders with two matches remaining.
A draw at Heracles Almelo in two weeks would be enough to earn Ajax a fourth successive league title, however.
Christian Poulsen gave Ajax a 35th-minute lead over ADO, although that was cancelled out within a minute by a Stefano Denswil own goal.
Second-half strikes from Davy Klaasen (69) and Thulani Serero (79) put Ajax back in front, with Tom Beugelsdijk's last-minute goal coming too late for ADO.
Feyenoord are indebted to efforts from Joris Mathijsen (29) and Darryl Janmaat (76) for keeping their slim title hopes alive, although the consolation of a Champions League spot remains their most realistic target.
NEC Nijmegen seem set to end the season in a relegation play-off after a 1-1 draw at AZ Alkmaar left them five points from safety.
AZ took the lead 10 minutes into the second half through a Nemanja Gudelj penalty but Kevin Conboy secured a point for the visitors three minutes from time.
RKC Waalwijk also played out a 1-1 draw with PEC Zwolle and are three points off 15th place. Daniel De Ridder saw his goal cancelled out by PEC's Mateusz Klich.
Goals from Jacob Mulenga and Juan Agudelo earned Utrecht a 2-1 victory over Heracles, who replied through Mikhail Rosheuvel and had Bart Schenkeveld sent off late on.
