Portsmouth stun Derby, as Middlesbrough and Preston also win in Capital One Cup

Adam McGurk and Conor Chaplin both scored as League Two Portsmouth stunned Derby County with a 2-1 win in the first round of the Capital One Cup at Fratton Park on Wednesday night.

Former Burton Albion forward McGurk nodded in Jayden Stockley's perfect cross before Derby goalkeeper Lee Grant fumbled the ball over his own line.

Jason Shackell then headed an equaliser for the Rams, but two minutes later teenager Chaplin, who had just joined the fray as a substitute, fired Pompey into Thursday night's second-round draw.

Portsmouth did not looked overawed by their Sky Bet Championship opponents as they dominated the first half.

The visitors pushed towards the end of the half as Andreas Weimann turned and volleyed wide before Johnny Russell had a low cross cleared off the line by Matt Clarke.

Weimann struck the side netting at the beginning of the second half for the away side, before Pompey took a deserved lead through McGurk.

The hosts nearly doubled their lead through Stockley and Ben Davies' quick-fire low efforts.

Shackell scored the first Derby goal of his second spell at the club in the 74th minute with a climbing header, but Chaplin's second senior goal from an angle soon upset the visitors.

Elsewhere, Will Keane's first goal for Preston and strikes from Jordan Hugill and Josh Brownhill saw North End ease to a 3-1 victory over Crewe at Gresty Road.

Hugill struck the opener with a penalty after five minutes, earning the spot-kick himself having stolen in front of goalkeeper Ben Garratt, who caught the striker as he was attempting to clear.

Manchester United loanee Keane added a second eight minutes later, steadying himself to slam home when Hugill's header hit a defender and fell into his path.

However, Crewe had half-time hope as Adam King swept in a first-time left-footed effort from the edge of the area on 36 minutes.

League Two Portsmouth produced an accomplished performance to knock Championship Derby County out of the Capital One Cup

Brownhill drove against the outside of a post from 25 yards at the start of the second period, before he wrapped up the victory four minutes from time with a close-range finish.

In the night's other tie, Christian Stuani marked his Middlesbrough debut with two goals in his side's 3-1 victory away to Oldham.

There was early drama at Boundary Park as Diego Fabbrini was brought down in the box by David Cornell - but the goalkeeper made amends by saving Adam Clayton's penalty.

After Yanic Wildschut had opened the scoring on 23 minutes, Uruguay international Stuani stole the show with two well-taken efforts in either half.

First he headed Fabbrini's lofted ball into the area firmly past Cornell four minutes before the break, and then he capped our his dream start to life in the North East by steering James Husband's low cross into the net shortly after the hour-mark.

Oldham pulled one back late on as Danny Philliskirk headed home in stoppage time, but it proved to be too little too late for the Latics as Aitor Karanka's side progressed into Thursday night's second-round draw.
